In April 2025, I was diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, a genetic heart condition that causes an obstruction to the outflow of blood from my heart. This diagnosis has changed my daily life in ways I never expected. I now experience severe shortness of breath, frequent palpitations, and even simple activities like walking, grocery shopping, or taking care of myself have become extremely challenging. As I prepare for open heart surgery, I am facing not only the physical and emotional toll, but also the financial burden that comes with such a major procedure.

These include a hotel stay for two nights near the hospital, gas and food for travel, and any additional durable medical equipment I’ll need for recovery, such as a wedge pillow and a new shower chair. I am also preparing for the costs of medications, follow-up appointments, and copayments that will add up quickly during my recovery. While my husband Jack and my family are present to help with my care, the financial aspect is something we cannot manage alone.
