Help Michael Stand Up To Cancer

MICHAEL’S STORY SO FAR
Hi, I’m Chris Mays, Michael Mays’ brother. I think I can speak for just about every family when I say cancer impacts all of our lives at some point. Beyond the obvious health concerns, the financial challenges can be overwhelming and even unachievable without a helping hand. That said, Michael is battling two forms of cancer, liver and colon, with relatively limited insurance coverage.

A brief timeline/summary:

  • August 24: Michael admitted himself to the Emergency Ward at Mission Hospital In Orange County, CA, after experiencing rectal bleeding and related difficulties.
  • October 6: Mike had a colonoscopy at the urging of doctors during his August 24 visit that provided CT scan results, which confirmed a growth in his lower colon.
  • October 25: A biopsy revealed several cancer spots in Michael’s liver.
  • November 1: A liver specialist confirmed cancer in his liver.
  • November 2: Doctors implanted two ports in Michael to address both cancers simultaneously during chemo treatments.
  • As of December 27: Michael has undergone several rounds of chemo and is doing as well as we can expect.

GENERAL OUTLOOK MOVING FORWARD
Mike’s in great physical shape, which helps him cope with these sessions. He does, however, feel effects for a few days after each treatment (upset stomach, lower energy, tainted taste buds, etc.). He can currently work part-time, but there’s no telling how long this good fortune will last. Of course, we remain optimistic.

Doctors are all but sure Mike will require surgery to remove the liver spots, which is a much more aggressive form of cancer. Whether the colon requires post-chemo radiation or surgery remains to be seen.

This cancer battle is a long haul for Michael, but he’s still young and very fit, which we hope continues to work in his favor. Donations of any size will help alleviate the tremendous financial stress, especially with so many unforeseen costs that may come with future surgeries and procedures.

No donation is too small, and every little bit is genuinely appreciated. Let’s help Mike overcome cancer and return to enjoying what he loves most. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
