Hello,
My name is Susan Caputo, and I am the life partner of Michael Coo. For those of you who do not know Michael personally, you may know of him. Michael dedicated himself to his craft as a Key Grip in the film industry for 43 years—a career defined by his strength, his problem-solving, and his unwavering support for his crew. Michael has always been the one people count on to "make it happen," but on December 14, 2025, our world was shifted in an instant. While riding his motorcycle toward the Sequoias—a place he loved—Michael was involved in a devastating accident that resulted in a serious spinal cord injury. After weeks of emergency neurosurgery and stabilization at AV Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai, Michael is now at the California Rehabilitation Institute, fighting every day to regain his independence. Seeing his "grip toughness" applied to his own recovery is inspiring, but the road home is one we cannot navigate alone.
I am starting this fund to help bridge the gap for the massive out-of-pocket expenses ahead, specifically to remodel our home for ADA accessibility and to ensure Michael has the specialized equipment and ongoing therapy he needs to live a full life.
Supporting Michael Coo’s Road to Recovery
On December 14, 2025, a day meant for the open road and the beauty of the Sequoias turned into a life-altering event for Michael Coo.
Michael, a 69-year-old lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, was involved in a serious accident while riding toward the Sequoia National Forest. The crash resulted in a critical spinal cord injury, leaving him fighting for his life.
A Hero Among Us
Thanks to the quick thinking and immediate action at the scene of his riding partner Steve Robertson and the incredible skill of first responders, Michael was found and is here today. Steve, we cannot thank you enough for being Michael’s guardian angel on that road. We extend our deepest, eternal gratitude to you.
The Journey So Far
Following the accident, Michael was airlifted to AV Medical Center (Trauma II) for initial stabilization. Once stable enough for transport, he was moved to Cedars-Sinai, where he underwent complex neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery.
Currently, Michael is at the California Rehabilitation Institute, working tirelessly through intensive medical, physical, and occupational therapy. While his spirit remains strong, the reality of a spinal cord injury means his world—and his home—must change.
How You Can Help
As we prepare for Michael to eventually return home, we are realizing that the out-of-pocket expenses for his continued care and accessibility will be substantial. Our immediate goal is to ensure he can live safely and with dignity. Funds raised will go directly toward:
• ADA Home Remodel: Converting his bathroom and bedroom to be fully wheelchair accessible.
• Specialized Equipment: Purchasing the mobility aids and medical equipment and supplies beyond what insurance covers required for daily life.
• Ongoing Rehabilitation: Funding extended physical and occupational therapy sessions beyond what insurance covers.
• Home Health Assistance: Ensuring Michael has the professional care he needs during his recovery at home.
