On December 3rd at noon, Michael was shot unprovoked by an unhinged person while he was in the parking lot of Phil’s Foodway, gathering a shopping cart to enter the store.
He did not know this person and was the target of a random act of evil and violence. According to information shared with us by the Omaha Police Department, the person who shot Michael is a convicted felon who was unlawfully in possession of a firearm, was not legally in the country, and had a documented history of severe mental health challenges.
Michael was shot 8 times, has undergone two surgeries, and will be undergoing more surgeries in the upcoming weeks. He remains in the ICU in critical, yet stable condition. We are incredibly grateful that he is still with us and fighting for his life. He has a long road ahead, and we ask that everyone continue to pray for his recovery and healing.
Michael is originally from Bellwood, Ne and has lived in North Omaha the past 13 years. He is best known for helping neighbors, being outdoors, cooking, gardening, and spending time with family. Michael had a 30-year career working construction as a heavy equipment operator and had just retired at the end of the summer. He believes in supporting local businesses and frequently shops at Phil’s and other neighborhood stores.
As our family navigates this devastating situation, many have asked how they can help. This GoFundMe has been set up by his family for Michael’s medical and recovery expenses, and we are grateful for any support you are able to give.
We are grateful to our community for standing with us during this difficult time. May we all continue to choose compassion, kindness, and forgiveness.
