My husband Michael is 75 years old and has worked hard his entire life—as a coal miner, grave digger, and in construction. In June 2025, our world changed when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He bravely underwent a Whipple operation in October, but since then, he has struggled to recover and has lost a great deal of weight. Watching him go through this has been heartbreaking, especially after losing my only daughter to a rare cancer in 2017. Facing this again is almost more than I can bear, but I get up each day thankful to God that I can be here for him.

I am 71 and have had to take off work for the last six months to care for Michael. Going back to work worries me, as I don’t know who would take care of him. We still owe a large amount on our home and car, and if that were paid off, it would allow me to stay by his side and care for him. Our monthly income is limited, so we will need to be very careful. Medicare Part D doesn’t cover much of his medication, and his medicine and other treatments are a significant financial burden. I don’t know how we will pay for it all, but we will have to find a way.
