Michael Loh, a dedicated lifelong firefighter, EMT, fire inspector, and fire academy instructor for nearly 35 years in Mercer and Middlesex Counties in NJ, recently experienced a life-altering spinal cord infection that has left him paralyzed, requiring the use of a wheelchair. While his courage and determination to recover and regain full independence remain unshaken, he now faces the toughest battle of his life—a battle that he cannot fight alone.
On July 11th, 2024 Mike developed a severe bacterial infection that attacked his spinal cord. After swift intervention from medical professionals and a lengthy emergency surgery, despite all efforts, the infection led to full paralysis from the waist down. His hospital stay was filled with complications including a gastric ileus that required an NG tube, catheter issues, and bedsores that extended his hospitalization by over two weeks. He has since been relocated to a specialized rehabilitation facility for acute spinal cord injury.
Almost a month to the day after his surgery, Mike and his family received the devastating news that his condition was likely permanent.
For almost 35 years, Mike has served Mercer and Middlesex Counties with unwavering dedication as a lifelong Volunteer Firefighter, Chief of Mercerville's station 12, career EMT, currently serving as Deputy Chief & Senior Manager of Fire and Loss Prevention for Brystol Meyers-Squibb, formerly a member of fire and emergency services with Princeton Plasma Physics Labs and longtime instructor at the Mercer County Fire Academy. He has spent decades putting others before himself, rushing into danger to protect our families, homes, and community, while also training the next generation of first responders. Now, it's our turn to give back to him. As Mike begins the next phase of his journey, the road ahead is filled with countless challenges—physical, emotional, and financial.
