Support Michael Brown's Heart Transplant Journey

I'm Janeka Phillips Brown and I'm starting this fundraiser on behalf of my husband, Michael “Mike” Brown. For the last 23 years, Mike has battled congestive heart failure (CHF) since the age of 21.

In April of 2023, Mike suffered a stroke. Over the next several months, he lost 50 pounds, he began having increased difficulty tolerating his heart medications and had frequent visits to the emergency room. During all of this, he was terminated from his job while on intermittent FMLA.

On May 23, 2024, Mike was hospitalized, and the doctors determined that his heart was not strong enough to function on its own. We were both devastated and heartbroken, but we knew that God answers prayers and He would never leave us.

On July 15th, after 53 days in the hospital, Mike received a lifesaving heart transplant. He’s making great progress, but we still have a long road ahead. There are many costs associated with his heart transplant that include

•medical expenses

•room and board near the hospital for six to eight weeks after his transplant

•travel to and from Mike's appointments

•travel to and from seeing our girls and making sure they are taken care of while I remain at his side

•and other expenses that may arise because of Mike's medical care.

Mike holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology and agency counseling. Despite his devastating diagnosis at a young age, has spent 23 years of his life in service to others. He has served his community in many roles including substance abuse counselor, therapist, and mentor. He’s a former employee of Alabama’s oldest private historically Black college where he worked as the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, Dean of Students and Director of Mental Health and Wellness.
