Help Michael and Eliza Through This Heartbreaking Journey

Michael and Eliza Adams were excited first-time parents when they found out they were expecting in February of this year. That excitement quickly turned to discouragement when during their 12-week OB appointment it was determined that their son, Henry Dean Adams has a rare condition called Sacral Agenesis. Doctors explained to Michael and Eliza that Henry’s spine would not develop properly and that because of this many of his internal organs would fail to develop as well.
Doctors informed Eliza that she would be putting her own life in jeopardy by attempting to carry Henry to term. Because of Henry’s condition, the lower half of his pelvis did not form properly, he only has one kidney, his bladder is unable to empty therefore he is unable to rid his little body of the amniotic fluid that is needed for proper lung development and function. This is causing his abdomen to be distended, which is a life-threatening risk to Eliza. Henry’s lungs will fail to develop, and Henry will be unable to breathe on his own when he is born. Sacral Agenesis also produces many other abnormalities which will make it impossible for Henry to sustain life for more than hours to days outside of the womb. Doctors have advised there is evidence of brain damage, neurological deficits, heart deformities and intestinal issues.
Despite the severe morning sickness Eliza has experienced throughout the entire pregnancy and the emotional and mental challenges Eliza and Michael have faced; they have been committed to carrying out the Lord’s plan for Henry’s life, however short that may be.
Eliza is a nurse at KU Med and Michael is a student at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and is employed on campus. Because of the complications and illness Eliza experienced during her pregnancy she has had to utilize most of her PTO. Being a student, Michael does not receive any paid time off and Eliza’s childbirth leave is not paid for in full.
Eliza and Michael are praying that Henry will live long enough after birth so that they may be able to hold him and spend some time with him before Henry passes. This has been an exceedingly difficult pregnancy, physically and emotionally. Upon Henry’s passing Michael and Eliza will need time to prepare for burial arrangements for their son and to grieve his loss and the loss of their hopes and dreams for their first-bornchild.
We are asking for contributions to help Michael and Eliza with medical bills, funeral expenses, loss wages, rent, utilities, and day-to-day expenses. Michael and Eliza are confident the Lord will provide for them during this most challenging time, but also know they will need help in the months ahead.
