My name is Jackie, I'm a close family friend of Micah and Mary. My husband has known Mary since they were 8 years old and Mary introduced and officiated our marriage. Micah and Mary are strong believers in God and are family to us. They have 5 beautiful children, our children's cousins. Micah is the sole source of income for the family. Due to this sudden medical event, I wanted to start this fundraiser to help offset loss of income while Micah recovers. I will also update this page as medical bill needs are give to me.
Early Tuesday morning Micah began to experience a sudden condition called acute compartment syndrome in his left leg. If not treated typically in 4-6 hours, this can result in tissue necrosis (death of the tissue and muscle in the limb) and loss of the limb or possibly one’s life. It is a very serious condition treatable only by surgery called a fasciotomy.
He was seen by a doctor mid morning on Tuesday and then immediately advised to rush to the hospital. When the orthopedic surgeon came out to meet Micah, his leg was turning black, which indicates tissue death. They rushed him into emergency surgery and he began his post-op recovering. This recovery had some intense hiccups due to severe dehydration and other factors that were unknown. The many friends and family that were notified began to pray diligently for a miracle.
His medical team made the decision to move him into ICU due to the amount of nurses being more likely to ensure him around the clock care. The next 12 hours were a roller coaster and very crucial. He lost a large amount of blood and began to have a seizure in the process of them trying to stabilize him. A rapid response code was called; they stabilized him and the bleeding miraculously stopped. His surgical wound finally began to coagulate without any major intervention of medications or blood transfusions needed. He was placed on oxygen and iv fluids/antibiotics and his levels began to come up to a normal place.
Thursday, June 6, he received a second surgery to debride the wound and see if any closure of the outer layer was possible. Another miracle occurred- tissue missing doesn’t replace itself this quickly, yet the dr was able to close 3/4 of the entire wound!! All glory to God. They placed a wound vac during this surgery and it is covering the remaining 9 cm of the open wound.
Today (Saturday, June 8) he underwent a 3rd and final surgery. They went in to debride the area again, check the remaining tissue/muscle, flush, debride and see how much of the wound they could close up. The doctor was again stunned that he was able to close the entire thing up the rest of the way! Micah will be sent home with a wound vac for incisions to promote circulation and healing and also prevent clotting.
BUT GOD…. To spite all the odds stacked against him, he has experienced miracle after miracle and has overcome!! We know this has been the hand of the Lord working on his behalf.
The mystery around why this happened still remains. ACS is typically brought on by a traumatic injury to the area affected. He had no such injury. His wound care specialist diligently studied other cases and discovered that with his line of work, being in severe heat possibly led to major dehydration and fatigue of the muscle that escalated into rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of muscle).
The future for Micah will require him to rest for an extended period of time to fully heal and also to prevent this injury from reoccurring. He will need the support of his friends and family on a daily basis for as long as it takes to see a complete recovery.
