Hi everyone,
Our names are Kelly and Erik, and we are opening our hearts to the animal-loving community today to ask for help with the absolute center of our world: our beloved 5-year-old cat, Meso. We adopted Meso from the Tails Humane Society in DeKalb when she was just a tiny 6-month-old kitten, and from the very moment we brought her home, she has been a treasured, irreplaceable member of our little family.

To some, she might be a cat, but to me, she is my sweet baby girl. Since I’ve never been able to have children of my own, Meso fills that incredibly deep, special place in my heart. She is my whole world, my child, and my greatest joy. We love her beyond words and want our baby safe, cozy, and comfortable in our arms.
Meso means far more to us than just a pet; she is an essential part of our daily lives and a profound source of therapy and emotional healing. My personal health journey has been incredibly life-altering and filled with hurdles. I am a colon cancer survivor, a battle that completely reshaped my perspective on life. Long before that, at just six years old, I survived a terrifying, near-death illness where I battled meningitis, encephalitis, a stroke, and sepsis all at the same time. While I survived, it left me with permanent, lifelong challenges, including hearing loss, low vision, and neurological damage.

Through every single hard day, every physical limitation, and every emotional milestone, Meso has been our constant anchor. She has an uncanny ability to sense when we need her most, carrying us through our darkest moments with her steady, unconditional affection. For both Erik and me, her presence is literal medicine. We joke that she has a dog's personality because she is so fiercely loving. She constantly circles our legs, rolls happily on her back to greet us, climbs her cat tree to watch the world go by, and proudly torments the squirrels from the safety of the window. She brings a pure, irreplaceable joy into our home.
Recently, our hearts completely broke when we realized our precious girl was facing a severe, agonizing battle of her own. After an urgent veterinary visit, Meso was diagnosed with severe feline stomatitis. This is a devastating autoimmune condition where a cat’s immune system essentially becomes violently allergic to its own teeth, causing massive, excruciating inflammation. It was so advanced that our veterinarian explained there was no other option: Meso required a full-mouth extraction to stop the disease from spreading to her throat and tongue.

This is one of the most painful surgeries a cat can undergo, and our hearts were so incredibly heavy for her leading up to it. On June 3, 2026, she underwent the massive surgery. When we picked her up at surgical discharge, the vet confirmed our worst fears. Meso had likely been masking extreme, silent pain for a very long time before the procedure.
The total cost for her care, spanning the initial urgent visits, the pre-op findings, and the intensive surgery itself, came to exactly $1,799.12. Leaving our baby in pain was never an option. To ensure she got this life-saving treatment immediately and was relieved of her suffering, we placed the entire balance onto CareCredit. Because our household income falls outside the qualifying range, we do not qualify for low-income veterinary assistance grants or nonprofit aid. However, paying down an unexpected $1,800 credit balance before high promotional interest rates kick in is a massive financial burden for our household.
The Beautiful News:
It's only been days since her surgery, and Meso’s resilience is inspiring! Her progress encourages hope and confidence in her healing journey.
