Merry Gill’s life changed forever 25 years ago when a minor car accident on her way to the dog park left her paralyzed from the waist down, with very limited use of her arms and hands. Since then, she has faced every challenge with courage and determination, even as she suffered the loss of both her father and brother. Most recently, Merry endured another devastating setback: a negligent care facility failed to detect a deep tissue pinch, which developed into a severe pressure abscess on her hip. The abscess grew undetected and untreated until it ruptured, causing immense pain and leading to a life-threatening infection that spread to her bone. Merry has now been told she must remain in care over Christmas, and her world has become even smaller—she is now bed bound, unable to leave her bed, let alone her room or home.

As if being in a wheelchair for 25 years wasn’t enough, Merry now faces unbearable pain and a long road to recovery. Insurance has nearly run out, and she has been sent home with an open wound the size of a tangerine, requiring constant care and bandage changes every three days. She needs help with medical and household bills, care for her beloved service dogs, and the basic costs of daily living.

Despite all she has faced, Merry has never stopped giving to others. After her accident, she earned two master’s degrees in social work and sociology, dedicating her life to healing those affected by inner city violence.
