I am a hospice nurse and have been caring for my community as a CNA and nurse for over 12 years. As a hospice nurse, I have seen so much and have cared for so many people with different illnesses, but I never thought of myself being the patient. So in 2021, when I was diagnosed with cancer, it came as a big shock but I was fortunate enough to be able to have my treatments close to home. After a long fight, I became a survivor and enjoyed five years in remission. Unfortunately, I have recently been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. This news has been incredibly difficult for me and my family, but I am determined to fight again.
Due to insurance issues and my inability to get the referrals I need here close to home, my treatments will be at Stanford. This means I will need to travel frequently for appointments, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Because of this, I won't be able to work, and my husband will be by my side throughout the process. We are facing a long road ahead, and the costs of travel, food, and lodging are adding up quickly. While some assistance may be available for housing during longer stays, we are unsure how much support we will receive.
As someone who has always been independent, asking for help is not easy for me. However, I know that we can't do this alone. We are reaching out to our friends, family, and community for support during this challenging time. Any help you can give—no matter the amount—will make a difference and help us focus on my recovery. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness and support.
