Support Melinda's Fight Against Lung Cancer

Donation protected

Hi Friends! I am a local mom who had the privilege this year of getting to know Melinda Viteri, who was the room teacher at Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School in Washington DC, for my daughter, Esther. Let’s just say that this year was a “growing” year for Esther, and I spoke and communicated often with Melinda, who was always available for my questions and would often assuage my concerns for my daughter. Through these correspondences, I learned of the impressive professionalism, kindness, compassion and experience Melinda has as a classroom teacher. In addition, I also became aware of her other life as a pilot. Not just any pilot though — here are just a few facts about Melinda’s unbelievable other life:
  • She established her own aviation nonprofit in 2015 where she raises funds for scholarships for underserved school children to go to flight school to become commercial pilots,
  • She serves as the Education Chair for the Royal Aeronautical Society
  • She travels all over the world to help young women take more STEM courses to pursue aviation
  • In July 2024, she will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Achievement from President Biden for her work with helping American Youth become commercial pilots!

I know…I was also speechless when I learned of the accomplishments of this humble woman! I was also speechless to learn about a month and a half ago that Melinda had passed out at a restaurant, only to be told that she had a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer.
As a non-smoker, Melinda was shocked, and has continued as her ever-optimistic self — she feels lucky to have good doctors, great friends, and a warm community around her.

She has had a portion of her lung and lymph nodes removed, and will begin radiation therapy shortly. She is currently on disability, which isn’t much and even with insurance, her bills are already in excess of $6,000 and growing by the day.

And, because when it rains…Melinda is also very recently separated.

Im hoping that as Milton parents, grandparents, or just people who appreciate dedicated and talented educators, we can band together to help Melinda during this challenging time. Please join me in supporting her.

Please note that 100% of the funds raised will go to helping Melinda cover her medical expenses during this time of transition. Further, while I am a Milton parent, this fundraiser is a private initiative, and not associated with the school.

Thank you for your consideration.
