Support Mekela's Urgent Surgery and Recovery

My name is Mekela, and I’m reaching out for help as I face a challenging medical situation. For years, I’ve been living with a dermoid cyst on my ovary that has grown to the point where surgery is now urgent. Without this procedure, there’s a chance I could lose the ovary entirely, and it’s already negatively impacting my reproductive health.

I’ve also been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), which causes additional complications. Along with removing the dermoid cyst, the surgery will include ovarian drilling—a procedure that targets smaller cysts on my ovaries. This offers hope of alleviating some of the symptoms of PCOS and improving my overall health.

Delaying this surgery isn’t an option anymore. I’ve been managing with birth control, but it’s no longer effective. My periods are extremely heavy and can last anywhere from 2-4 weeks, affecting my daily life, my health, and my ability to plan for the future.

I’m insured through my husband’s job, but the costs are still overwhelming. The deductible, additional fees not covered by insurance, and lost income while my husband takes time off to care for me during recovery are more than we can handle right now.

I was laid off in April 2024 and haven’t been able to secure a new job since. I’ve been holding off on this surgery, hoping to be hired by now, but I can’t wait any longer. This surgery isn’t just about relieving my current symptoms—it’s about my future. Once I recover and get back on my feet with a job, my husband and I can finally begin family planning without this major obstacle standing in our way.
