Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a chronic life-long autoimmune disorder that causes dry, itchy skin and inflammation. There is no cure — you can only treat the symptoms and hope for the best. For some, it’s a minor inconvenience, and for others, it can feel like living hell. My best friend Megan is one of the lucky people who suffers from this condition! Can you guess what end of the spectrum she falls on? (hint: it’s hell)

For the last six months, Megan has been suffering from non-stop flareups. The majority of her body is covered in extremely itchy, dry skin that stings, burns, blisters, and swells. Sleeping is a rarity, and when she does, she scratches herself bloody if she doesn’t wear gloves to bed. She has sought treatment from multiple dermatologists and allergists to no avail. Steroids are the most commonly prescribed treatment for eczema, but ironically, steroid withdrawal has been the primary suspect for her debilitating flare, which worsens the condition of your eczema and has no treatment but to run it’s course (which can take months to over a year). I will spare you from naming every single thing she has done in attempt to find some semblance of relief (the list is frustratingly long, including expensive topicals, intensive dietary restrictions, and injectable medications such as Dupixent and Adbry), but I think you get the picture — what Megan is going through is isolating, agonizing, and infuriating.

It has reached the point where Megan can no longer function at work and has been forced to resign. For those who don’t already know, she is an integral part of her bar, and she is a mentor and friend to many. Parting from her team (hopefully temporarily) was not truly a decision, but a necessity imposed by the state of her health. Her efforts to mend haven’t ceased, and she is still seeking medical guidance, but being unable to work puts her in a serious financial predicament. If you are in a position to contribute, know that 100% of the money raised will go towards covering Megan’s costs of living — bills, groceries, doctor’s appointments, etc.

Anyone who knows Megan knows she is a person who often forgets herself in prioritizing other’s happiness and conveniences. It’s long overdue we return the favor, so let’s do what we can to support Megan through her recovery!
