Three weeks ago we found four baby domestic rabbits dumped in nearby Sandpointe park. A fellow walker had found them shortly before we walked up and they were hiding in some bushes with a pile of pellets dumped beside them (of course no water..). Between the four of us, we were able to catch them and we brought them home hoping to drop them off at a rescue that day. Unfortunately, this ended up being a taller task than we had expected as all area rescues are completely full and overwhelmed with unwanted rabbits. While our local shelter must take them, we are hoping to avoid this option as the shelter is also inundated with rabbits and we don't want them to fall through the cracks or be separated if we can help it. Additionally we want to ensure they end up in responsible homes that understand the commitment associated with a rabbit to prevent future rehoming or dumping.
We have spent the past 3 weeks contacting and following up with every rescue we can find in an effort to find these babies a foster home where they can be socialized, fixed, vaccinated and adopted. Unfortunately we have had no luck and have been told the only way to adopt them through a rescue at this time is to fund their medical care independently.
As rabbit owners ourselves, responsible rabbit care is extremely important to us and we are committed to giving these adorable and friendly bunnies the best chance at a good life despite their rough start. We are turning to the community for help in covering the cost of their spays (3), neuter (1) and check ups/vaccinations. We will be seeking veterinary care in partnership with a rescue to keep costs low. Any additional funding will be donated to the organization they are fostered/adopted through.
