My sister Meagan Cortez was on a quick trip to Belize when a split-second decision changed everything. She jumped off the end of a pier, not realizing how shallow the water was, and suffered a devastating injury—breaking her neck. All vertebrae in her neck have at least a hairline fracture, and the C6 vertebra has been operated on to restore by using a piece of her hip. Meagan is currently paralyzed from the neck down but with slight movement in her arms. She also suffered a concussion and has a blood infection. The emotional and financial toll has already been overwhelming, but the travel insurance will help with significant portions of it. The out-of-pocket costs for her care are already significant, and the bills keep coming as we navigate her recovery and ongoing treatment.
