Support McKinley High School Chess Club

Hello,
My name is Mr. McNabb and I am trying to raise money to cover expenses for the McKinley High School Chess Club! Located in Honolulu, McKinley High School is the oldest public high school on O‘ahu, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1865. We are a Title I school, which means we serve a lot of students from low-income families, and since chess is not a varsity sport, we do not receive any funding from the Department of Education.
Our students are passionate about chess, but we face significant financial challenges to support their participation. The following is a list of the costs incurred by the chess club:
- US Chess Federation Registration - $20 per player per year
- Tournament Registration - $25 per player for team tournaments and $100 per player for individual tournaments.
- Food at tournaments - Team Tournaments are all day long so we provide lunch for the team, roughly $100 per tournament
There are 7 team tournaments and 3 individual tournaments per year, so if a player plays in all 10 tournaments, the total registration cost will be ($25 x 7) + ($100 x 3) = $475 per player. We are hoping to get around 8 players per tournament so, the total cost for the whole team will be ($475 x 8) = $3000. Total food budget for team tournaments will be ($100 x 7) = $700. With $3000 for registration costs and $700 for food, we will have $200 left over to print chess club T-shirts and pay a local chess master to give a masterclass/chess exhibition at McKinley.
Thank you so much for your generosity! We are proud to support our chess players and continue to foster their love for the game!
Mahalo,
Mr. McNabb
