Support Maya’s Journey with a Service Dog

My name is Maya. I am a college student that was just starting college life. I had a job, a place to live and classes I loved. I suddenly had a seizure which I have never had in my life. I was given migraine cocktails and was sent off. A week later my parents noticed I was not acting myself, and I was out driving around when I was told not to drive because of seizure activity. My mom took me to the hospital just to get checked out. The doctor decided to do an MRI. I was told I was being admitted to the hospital due to swelling in the brain. I spent 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital, enduring several tests. I was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis. This is where your own immune system attacks your body and mine was attacking my brain. This disease is actually known as the mystery disease because doctors really don’t know all the effects of it. I was affected by extremely low sodium and potassium levels and loss of body temperature control on top of memory loss. I’m currently back at home recovering. The doctors can’t guarantee I will get back to 100%. I have registered for classes in the fall, so I am wanting to get a medical alert dog to help me navigate normal college life. I have found a dog, but it is through a for-profit organization and the cost of getting the dog and the needed training is $10,000. I would appreciate any help you can provide me to get closer to my goal.
