Urgent Support for Maya’s Cancer Surgery & Recovery

Our beloved community member Maya needs our support right now.

On February 22, 2026, Maya was diagnosed with uterine cancer. After urgent testing, doctors confirmed that the cancer is growing at a medium aggressive rate and requires immediate surgery.

Maya is scheduled to undergo a full hysterectomy on March 12, 2026, which will include removal of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and several lymph nodes to determine whether the cancer has spread. We will not know the full stage of Maya’s cancer until after surgery, when pathology results are reviewed in early April.

Like many disabled people in our communities, Maya is facing this serious medical moment with courage, but also with very limited financial resources.

Maya’s Health and Disability

Maya lives with multiple disabilities and complex medical conditions. They were born with a rare congenital heart condition called a right-sided aortic arch with a vascular ring. This condition affects Maya’s breathing, swallowing, and physical movement, and makes surgery higher risk than it would be for many people.
Because of this, Maya’s recovery will require significant rest, care, support, and a stable healing environment.

What Maya Needs Support With

Maya is a low-income, multiply disabled community organizer and artist who lives on a housing voucher and Medi-Cal. Maya will need to stop working completely during surgery and recovery.

This means Maya will need help covering basic living expenses during this time, including:
  • Food and groceries
  • Gas and transportation
  • Car insurance
  • Phone and internet bills
  • Basic household costs during recovery
  • Medical needs that Medi-Cal does not cover
