My cousin, Jessica (Rasmussen) Lopez, and her husband, Austin Lopez, recently welcomed their 5th baby, Maxwell. At a routine 20-week anatomy scan, doctors discovered that the left side of Maxwell’s heart was underdeveloped. Maxwell was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and Jessica began seeing specialists to prepare for his arrival.
In his first few weeks of life, Maxwell has proven to be just like his parents: strong, courageous, and full of faith. His first surgery, performed on just his 4th day of life, went as well as we’ve all been praying for, but he still has a long journey ahead. Complex surgeries and a lifetime of special medical attention await.
Jessica and Austin are soaking up every minute with their new baby boy in a specialized hospital located over 2 hours from their home. Their 4 other kids (ages 5 to 2) are being cared for by family members while Jessica and Austin travel back and forth to be with Maxwell as he recovers and prepares to come home in several weeks.
If you’ve seen Jessica and Austin in action as parents, you’ll know that they can pretty much handle anything. They’re some of the greatest people I know. While they would never ask for this kind of help themselves, I know many others have been touched by their goodness and feel inspired to help in some way.
In this season of giving, please consider giving a small donation to help with medical, travel, lodging, and other expenses associated with welcoming Maxwell into their family. Please recognize that even the smallest contributions make an impact that extend far beyond any monetary value.
If you are unable to donate but wish to give your support in some way, consider adding Maxwell, his doctors, parents, and siblings to your prayers.
