Support for the Herrero family

Máximo Herrero, oldest brother of Erika Deegan, Dulce Herrero Kahn and David Herrero, is in critical condition with COVID. He is being treated in Honduras, where he lives with his wife, Virginia. His family in the United States is trying to help relieve the tremendous financial strain that his illness has placed on his family at home.

Máximo is 59 and healthy, with no pre-existing conditions. He started showing COVID symptoms in late July and was admitted to a clinic on Aug. 4 for oxygen support. His condition has steadily worsened since then. On Aug. 15 his oxygen saturation became dangerously low and he needed additional support. His labs began to show signs of infection and inflammation. On Monday, Aug. 16, he was transferred to another facility, where he is now being treated for complications including pneumothorax and severe fibrosis. On Thursday, doctors placed chest tube to try to address the air building up between his lungs and chest cavity.

Honduras is a third world country and has the poor healthcare that comes with that. People do not have health insurance and everything is out of pocket. The amount of money that has already been spent is overwhelming and there are many more bills ahead. In Honduras, if you can’t pay the bill, they won’t treat you.

Máximo belongs to a Christian community that has provided much support, including financial help, but there are so many sick people because of the surge that there simply isn't enough money to keep helping everyone. Máximo and Virginia need help so he can continue to receive the medical care he needs to fight for life. Please consider whether you might be able to help. And please pray with the Herrero family!

Erika y Bob están tratando de ayudar a aliviar la tremenda tensión financiera que su enfermedad ha impuesto a su familia.

Máximo tiene 59 años y está sano, sin condiciones preexistentes. Comenzó a mostrar síntomas de COVID a fines de Julio y fue ingresado en una clínica el 4 de Agosto para recibir oxígeno. Su condición ha empeorado constantemente desde entonces. El 15 de agosto, su saturación de oxígeno se volvió peligrosamente baja y necesitaba apoyo adicional. Sus laboratorios volvieron a mostrar signos de infección e inflamación. El lunes 16 de Agosto fue trasladado a otra instalación, donde ahora está siendo tratado por complicaciones que incluyen neumotórax y fibrosis severa. El jueves, los médicos le colocaron un tubo torácico para tratar de eliminar el aire que se acumulaba entre sus pulmones y la cavidad torácica.

Honduras es un país del tercer mundo y la  atención médica nos es buena debido a pocos recursos. La gente no tiene seguro médico y todo sale de su bolsillo. La cantidad de dinero que ya se ha gastado es abrumadora y hay muchas más facturas por delante. En Honduras, si no puede pagar la factura, no lo tratarán.

Máximo pertenece a una comunidad cristiana que ha brindado mucho apoyo, incluida ayuda financiera, pero hay tanta gente enferma debido al aumento repentino que simplemente no hay suficiente dinero para seguir ayudando a todos.
