Dear friends, family and community, My name is Shawnee and I’m reaching out on behalf of Mavric and his family with heartfelt urgency to share his story and ask for your generous support. Mav is my amazing nephew—a 17 year old student at Seabright High School in Santa Cruz, California, battling an aggressive form of scoliosis. This condition threatens to reshape his future with chronic pain and health complications if we don’t begin treatement right away. As he embarks on a career in music production, studying at Cabrillo College, Mav's dreams are shadowed by the specter of spinal fusion surgery. We believe in a brighter, pain-free future for Mav, but he needs your help to access life-changing treatment that can alter the course of his future.

Mav's journey with scoliosis began later in life, presenting him with significant challenges that he faces every day with determination, resilience, and unwavering faith. Despite his obstacles, Mav's spirit remains strong.

Mav was born very premature and spent the first 3+ months of his life in the NICU both at Stanford Children’s Hospital and Dominican Hospital. Over the course of his life Mav overcame many challenges including procedures, surgery, neurology appointments for epilepsy, physical and occupational therapy. Through all of this, Mav has remained positive.

The Urgency of Treatment:

Scoliosis is more than a physical curvature; it can transform into a relentless source of chronic back pain, nerve pain, and potential heart and lung complications. For Mav, the highly invasive six hour spinal fusion surgery simply doesn’t feel like an option. The surgery could leave him with mobility issues for his entire life, resulting in additional surgeries down the road.

We are pursuing an approach that offers Mav the best chance at a healthy, physically functioning life without the invasive nature of traditional surgery. This treatment promises not just relief from pain but also the preservation of Mav's mobility, crucial for his quality of life. The clinic we seek to get Mav treatment at has the ability to do spinal curve reduction noninvasively, and will consist of an ongoing 2+ year treatment program.

It will cover the costs of specialized treatments, therapies, medical and therapy equipment he will be using daily for the next 18+ months. Your generosity will also alleviate the financial strain on his family, allowing them to focus on providing the love and support Mav needs during this critical time, while also caring for his two younger siblings. These initial fundraising efforts will cover the initial intensive two week clinic he will be attending daily alongside my sister, Nikki, his mother, and provide him with a custom brace he will be wearing 18+ hours daily. Mav is hopeful and fully committed to all of his treatment excited to see what his new life will look like.
