In December 2023, our family’s world shifted.
Maverick was just 7 years old when he became unexpectedly and seriously ill. What we first believed would be a temporary diagnosis turned into a long, complicated medical journey that we are still navigating today.
Initially, doctors suspected Transient Erythroblastopenia of Childhood (TEC). But Maverick didn’t recover as expected. Since then, he has undergone three bone marrow biopsies and received more than 20 blood transfusions. After extensive testing and specialist evaluations, Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) remains the only diagnosis doctors have been able to confirm — and the cause is still unknown.
Maverick’s case is especially complex because PRCA typically presents much earlier in childhood (typically as Diamond Blackfan), yet his symptoms did not begin until age 7. Because of this, both parents and all siblings were tested as potential bone marrow transplant matches.
And yet, Maverick is still Maverick.
He is an incredible tumbler on a competitive team, determined and fearless in the gym. He’s also deeply artistic, happiest when he’s coloring, drawing, and creating. Even on hard days, he finds joy — and reminds us why we keep pushing forward.
This fundraiser will help support:
Ongoing medical care, lab work, and transfusions
Specialist consultations and long-term monitoring
Future genetic testing as science advances
Travel and related expenses for care
Lost income due to caregiving demands
Everyday needs while we focus on Maverick’s health
We don’t know exactly what the next chapter looks like — but we do know that Maverick deserves the best care, the fullest life, and the time and support it takes to keep searching for answers.
If you’re able to donate, share, or simply keep our family in your thoughts, please know how deeply grateful we are. Every bit of support reminds us we’re not facing this alone.
With love,
The Gleason Family
