On May 19, 2025, our cherished friend Maureen Ann Smith, at the age of eighty-two, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Taylor Smith, Jr. who passed away on April 25, 2010.
Born on January 5, 1943, in Washington D.C. to Bruce Moore and Geraldine Tippet Moore, Maureen was an only child. Although she was born on the East Coast, she was the daughter of a United States Naval Officer which moved her to the West Coast, where she attended her education at St. Mary’s Academy in Los Angeles.
In October of 1964, she married Conway T. Smith Jr. in Pasadena, California, and out of the union they had five children. Maureen was a devoted mother to their five children; Adrianne Howze, Nichelle Smith, Conway “Cee” Smith, Zachary Smith and Jean-Paul Smith. She was also a proud grandmother of seventeen grandchildren and a great-grandmother to six great-grandchildren. Her love for her family was the foundation of her life and a source of endless joy and strength.
In 1971, she moved with her husband from Pomona, California to Silver Spring, Maryland. Maureen was a parishioner of St. Camillus Catholic Church where she began to teach Sunday School. In 1973, Maureen earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Bowie State University. In 1981, she left Hyattsville, Maryland and returned back to California where she spent most of her years until relocating to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 2023.
Upon her return back to California she built a dedicated career in Retail Management with Robinsons-May Company, where she worked for twenty-three years before retiring in 2005.
Maureen was deeply involved in her faith community, actively serving in Catechist Religious Education and earning a Master Catechist certification. Her commitment to spiritual teaching and service was a reflection of her compassion and her desire to guide others.
Maureen was known for her unwavering love, quiet strength, and generous heart. Her legacy of faith, wisdom, and resilience live on through the many lives she touched.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Harrisburg, PA on June 26, 2025. She was laid to rest with her husband at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Maryland.
