Good evening. My name is Matt Dunning and I have a moderate case of Crohn's disease. I was diagnosed with this almost 20 years ago and had my first surgery for it about 17 years ago. Over the past 2-3 years, the disease has progressed and gotten worse than it ever has been. A year ago, I started seeing specialists at the University of Michigan again to try and get the disease under control. They tried to perform some new procedures to try and avoid having to go back in to do major surgery. These procedures did help temporarily, but the disease has done too much damage and the need for another major surgery is inevitable.
During the past year, I ended up losing my healthcare and disability benefits through my job due to a pre-existing condition. The stress of the job caused me to resign in July. I started working for myself doing small construction and remodeling jobs. I was able to find healthcare through the marketplace. This has been a very hard time making that transition to being self-employed while simultaneously trying to work through the bad days that the Crohn's is causing.
Now, I'm looking at having surgery at the end of February 2025. I'm trying to work as many jobs as possible to prepare myself for the potential of being down for 6 months. Life doesn't stop and bills just keep stacking up.
Asking for help, and actually taking the time to create this is one of the hardest things for me to do. But I also know, without asking for help, none of this will get any better. I am not good at writing about myself or this situation. I'm sure there's questions and concerns people will have, please just reach out to talk to me about it. Anything you can do will be extremely helpful and much appreciated.
