Support Matt's Recovery After Brain Surgery

Hi All!

This GoFundMe has been created on behalf of Matt Winter, who is currently recovering from brain surgery he had yesterday.

A little over a month ago, Matt collapsed in his kitchen while getting ready for work. As a result of the fall, he needed four staples in his head. With no prior medical history and no clear reason for the collapse, Matt’s doctors recommended a CT scan and further testing. After several days in the hospital and an eventual MRI, a brain tumor was discovered. Thankfully, Matt had insurance, but the initial hospital stay alone still left him with significant medical debt.

Right now, Matt is recovering in the ICU at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. He will remain in the hospital for several days before returning home to continue his recovery. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to return to work for weeks, and because he’s new to his position with SC Johnson, he hasn’t yet accrued sick time or PTO. This means he will have no income and won’t be able to pay his hospital bills.

Matt is the father of Salome, a beautiful 13-year-old OUSD student, who lives with him much of the time. He needs help supporting his child, in addition to covering medical bills and monthly expenses. These are tough times.

As cliche as it sounds, Matt would literally give you the shirt off his back. He’d do anything for his friends, family, and community (especially his Roots’ people!). He’s the most loving, gregarious person with a loud, roaring laugh and a closet full of Roots’ gear. He's happiest when making those around him chuckle and bringing people together. Matt lives modestly and frugally, and right now, he just needs a little help so he can focus on his recovery and the needs of his child... and get back to the supporter section at the Coli!
