Support Matt's Journey to Ohio State

I’m a first-generation, low-income, queer Latino student who just graduated early from UC Irvine with honors. In my short three years, I worked as a tour guide, Resident Advisor, course assistant, and orientation coordinator — where I helped design programming for Spanish-speaking families. I also completed three research projects, earned two faculty-nominated awards, and was accepted into grad programs at NYU, Harvard, Georgetown, and Ohio State. I chose Ohio State because they’re fully funding my Master’s in Student Affairs and Higher Education.

While my tuition and housing are covered during the academic year, moving across the country isn’t. I must be in Columbus by early August, but I won’t receive my first paycheck until late August and it will only cover half a month’s work — just enough for rent and maybe some groceries. Loans aren’t available until the semester starts. I come from a low-income family and couldn’t build savings because the very jobs that got me into grad school also went toward covering my basic needs throughout undergrad. Furthermore, most employers aren’t willing to hire for just two months, leaving me without a financial cushion for this transition.

I need support from my community to help bridge this financial gap and break down this barrier would mean everything to me. Your investment in my journey won’t be taken lightly; I promise to work hard and carry it forward with purpose, just as I did in undergrad.
