Support Matt's Battle Against Leukemia

Donation protected
On July 21st, Brittany noticed that Matt wasn't quite himself—he'd been feeling unusually lethargic, light-headed, and just generally unwell. This was particularly out of the ordinary for Matt, who is a black belt in jiu-jitsu and enjoys an active lifestyle. Concerned, Brittany scheduled an appointment for him at a nearby urgent care clinic. It was there that the seriousness of the situation became clear: Matt's hemoglobin levels were dangerously low (only 4), and he was immediately transferred to a local emergency room.

As the doctors began their evaluations, Matt and Brittany received news that no one ever expects—the lab results strongly suggested leukemia. With this new concern, Matt was transferred to John Muir in Walnut Creek, where he was admitted to the oncology ward after the ER conducted its own comprehensive workup.

During his initial consultation, the oncologist started Matt on oral chemotherapy as they prepared for a bone marrow biopsy to confirm the specific type of leukemia. On July 24th, the biopsy confirmed their fears: Matt was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a particularly aggressive form of cancer. The news was devastating, but Matt and Brittany are determined to face it head-on.

Matt’s urgent care appointment evolved into a six-week hospital stay. While the staff at John Muir have been nothing short of amazing, this has been incredibly challenging, not just for him but for the whole family. The kids, especially, have struggled with their dad being an hour away, and because of Matt's weakened immune system due to both the treatments and the leukemia itself, visits have been limited. It’s been tough, but the family remains strong and united.

On July 30th, Matt was finally able to come home for a brief week—a much-needed respite before his second round of chemotherapy begins, which will require another hospital admission. This week at home is a precious time for Matt. He’s looking forward to cheering on Mikayla and Arielle at their soccer games and spending quality time with Cillian, kicking around a soccer ball while the girls are at school. The family is cherishing these moments together, drawing strength from one another as they prepare for the road ahead.

Once the oncologist is satisfied that the cancer has been eliminated, Matt will require a bone marrow transplant to reduce the risk of recurrence. The family will learn more about this procedure after the consultation, and we will keep you informed.

The Mahoney Family will be walking with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on October 5th for their "Light the Night" fundraiser. The more the merrier! They would love for you to join them, more information can be found here: https://pages.lls.org/ltn/oak/EastBay24/TeamMahoney

In December, Leah Balentine will be running the California International Marathon in Sacramento to raise awareness and funds for the Mahoney family. This cause is near and dear to Leah not only because she considers the Mahoney family good friends, but also because the first marathon she ran was a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 2009. The marathon she is running in December will be her 18th.

We are reaching out to ask for your support during this incredibly challenging time. Your donations will go directly to helping the Mahoney family manage the overwhelming medical expenses and the daily costs of living as they navigate this journey. The family has generously decided that 25% of donations will go toward the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant impact and is deeply appreciated. Please consider donating and sharing this page with others who may want to help.
