So, after nearly 30 years in small format printing, life has decided to force me into a career realignment. Of those 30 years, I worked the last 25 for one company. Three years ago it was bought and taken over by a new owner. After some time working with him I committed to staying on and helping him with the transition. Then, after that bit of upheaval, the other foot dropped. I developed an allergy to one of the main components used for printing there - toner for digital printers. I'm no longer able to perform the job I excelled at there, or most likely anywhere else, as the toner manufacturer - Ricoh, is one of the main providers of machines in the industry. Even handling materials printed on their machines has become a dicey affair, with a breakout occurring when campaigners started stuffing flyers in my hands when I went to vote recently. I have to be careful with mail as well. More complicated in the situation is that long-term disability and workers comp have been a bust. The burden of proving allergic reactions and our frustrating medical system have not helped in that regard. The ability for Ricoh to hide several ingredients in their "proprietary confidential blend."
At this stage, while still looking for Design positions that don't involve handling materials printed on those production machines, I've decided to try Entrepreneurship and lean into my side hustle full time as a screen printing/apparel/promotional item printer. As it stands (and some of you already know), I already have a head start, having already acquired a good deal of equipment and a site to work out of. This fundraiser is more for initial expenses in getting the full legalities, licensing, supplies and honestly, a bit of a buffer while I close the gap in consistent sales to at least the greater portion of my old salary.
This has all be one rough kick in teeth. Having the job you spent 25 years kick ass at decide to start destroying your body is a tough one to stomach. It's been a tough road of tests and decision making over the last 8 months, but I'm excited to start on this journey. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I work to get this thing going full speed. Many Thanks!
