Support Matthew's Recovery after Motorcycle Accident
Donation protected
Matthew was in a life-changing accident on his motorcycle on the evening of Thursday May 15 when a distracted driver hit him on a highway in Gainesville. He is extremely lucky to be alive and recuperating, although with some major injuries. He has already undergone about half a dozen surgeries, with several more coming up (including one soon for the severe burns on his skin, which cover over 25% of his body) and many follow up procedures, appointments, and therapy in his future. As soon as they got the news, his parents drove up to Gainesville from Miami, and his twin sister flew to Gainesville from New York City. They have all remained in Gainesville to be by his side at the hospital during this time. His family and medical team are currently working on transferring him to a hospital in Miami.
Matthew will be entirely non-weight bearing for a while, given that his left arm and leg were basically shattered to pieces (and are now held together by rods and screws), his right hip was dislocated and broken, and his right wrist and elbow have several fractures, aside from the few broken ribs and punctured lung (he had at least 20 broken bones). However!!! He is alive, and he will recover!!! He and his family are incredibly grateful that he was wearing a helmet, and that he did not suffer any brain or spinal cord injuries. He does remember the accident entirely, and part of his recovery will be a mental/emotional journey to deal with the PTSD - but he's got a new lease on life already! Doctors are hopeful he'll be able to swim in 6 months!
This fundraiser has been organized by Matthew's family and friends. For obvious reasons, he will be unable to work for the foreseeable future, and will have many expenses to deal with throughout and after his long recovery.
