Support Matthew’s Journey After Spinal Cord Injury

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Janet Maynard. I am raising money for my brother, Matthew Frutchey.

After our mother passed away in May of 2024, Matthew traveled to her home in Alabama. In July of 2024, while moving a washing machine, Matthew passed out only to wake up on the floor where his life would be changed forever.

Matthew suffered a complete spinal cord injury, Grade A on the ASIA Test. This meant permanent paralysis at the C1 ASIA A.

Two surgeries on his spinal column were performed just so he could be in a sitting position and to save his shoulder function. A third surgery was performed for a colostomy. Five days into his injury, he developed a pressure wound, stage 4, which he is still actively receiving wound care to heal.

Matthew has suffered a life-changing accident and still wears his smile. He still has his funny personality and still talks about helping others once he can get back in his chair. Matthew is passionate about animals, loves working on small engine repair, and enjoys being outside in the sunshine. He is a true friend to everyone he meets and my best friend.
He has been a hard worker his entire life, which unfortunately has disqualified him for any financial help from the state.

Our family has come together over the past year to help Matthew financially with everyday living expenses. He is on a fixed income in which his medications alone take a quarter of his disability check every month.

His fiancée, Marcy, has been a blessing to all. She is Matthew’s 24/7 caregiver. Matthew requires rotation every two hours, feeding, bathing, range of motion exercises, medication, etc. The two of them are the dream team. The love between them radiates even through the physical and emotional pain of it all.

However, this type of injury requires very expensive care and equipment. At the moment, they have no transportation for Matthew. Insurance does not cover transportation. They are using non-emergency transport via ambulance to get to doctor appointments. We have tried to get funding through federal and state grants with no prevail. The cost of a transport van is pricey, and as a family, we can only maintain basic living expenses. Matthew needs to be able to go on outings to improve his mental health. To be independent. Since his injury he has only been able to leave the home in an ambulance on a stretcher when needed for medical care.

We decided it’s time to ask for the public’s help. We appreciate ANY donation you are able to give and will keep you updated along this journey. Please help share this page on all your social media. Your generosity, prayers, and love are blessings beyond what we can express.

THANK YOU
