Julia and Jacob Chouinard, along with their family, are raising funds to support their uncle, Matthew Carreiro, following a life-altering accident.

On July 26, 2025, Matt suffered a severe spinal cord injury at the C4 level and underwent major surgery to stabilize his neck and relieve the compression on his spinal cord. Surgeons fused his C2 to T1 vertebrae and performed a laminectomy of four vertebrae (removing portions of bone) to create more space around the spinal cord and prevent further damage. In addition to the spinal injury, Matt suffered an epidural hematoma, which caused additional pressure and swelling around the spinal cord. He is currently being treated at Rhode Island Hospital and has been moved from the Neuro Critical Care Unit to a more stable phase of his recovery, a big milestone — but he still faces a long road ahead.

Matt has been diagnosed with a C4 ASIA B Spinal Cord Injury, meaning he retains most sensory function below the injury level, but motor function is severely impaired.

Matt will begin an intense inpatient rehabilitation program at Spaulding, where he will undergo specialized physical and occupational therapy focused on spinal cord injuries. This will be a critical phase of his recovery and will require time, strength, and support.

This has been devastating for Matt and his family. His pride and joy are his three sons: Zachary (16), Tyler (13), and Alexander (9). The emotional, physical, and financial adjustment ahead will be enormous. Through it all, Matt — with the unwavering support of his wife, Nikki — has remained incredibly strong, positive, and hopeful.
