Support Math Club at JMM

Hello! My name is Rachel Bertaud, and I am the president of Colorado State's Math Club!

Our goal for this fundraiser is to have a space for people who are interested in donating anything to the fund helping send our graduating members to the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in San Francisco. The trip will be from Jan. 2nd-Jan 7th of 2024. There are 9 members wanting to go (all but one pictured), including myself.

There are three members who have the opportunity to present, with all three abstracts being approved!

  • Trevor Overton is researching the implementation of a Schur complement image post processing method for Electrical Impedance Tomography.

  • Emma Slack is researching Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH), a rare but fatal disease characterized by high blood pressure and unresolved blood clots in the lungs. While a patient could have upwards of 20 or more of these blood clots, modern medicine only allows surgeons to operate on 3 before it becomes too dangerous and taxing for the patient. The goal of our project is to use mathematical modeling to determine the best treatment plan for CTEPH patients, i.e. find which blood clots are the best to remove to decrease blood pressure and increase blood flow.

  • Rachel Bertaud is researching the particle-size distribution of platinum nanoparticle synthesis using Mechanism-Enabled Population Balance Modeling (ME-PBM). The process includes using ODEs to track particles in the synthesis process through understandings of the proposed mechanisms. ME-PBM is a way to establish the correct mechanism of synthesis in a disproof-based fashion using particle size distributions obtained in lab.

The purpose of the group's travel is to give graduating students the chance to attend the largest math conference in the world, learn about all the research that the world is doing, and hopefully find something that really sparks their interest. There are so many paths within mathematics, and it will grant the students the ability to learn about most of all the paths that can be taken. Furthermore, the students will be able to make connections with other schools and persons of interest that would not be as easily done outside of the conference.

Math Club will have a presentation where each member who attended presents their interests from the conference at the beginning of next semester. For those who will be graduating in December, their interests will be presented by another member. This will be a great experience for those going, promote the field of Mathematics (and thus the department), and promote the club, as well. This is a trip that Math Club made every year up to the pandemic in 2020. When I first started going to Math Club in 2021, there were three members. Now, we have between 20-30 members consistently coming every week. This is something that we tried to get done last year, but lacked the funds to actually do. I am quite hopeful for the future of Math Club, and sending our graduating members to Math Club would promote the club, the community within, the department itself, and, most importantly, the members going.

Any donation would be very appreciated. Thank you to all who donate!
