**She does not fight alone**
Dear friends, family, and compassionate souls,
On March 15th, our beloved friend Mary Lu received the shocking diagnosis of breast cancer. As we rally around her during this challenging time, we invite you to join us in supporting Mary Lu on her journey towards healing and recovery.
**About Mary Lu:**
- Mary Lu is a full-time student at West Virginia University (WVU), where she has been pursuing her master's degree in counseling since August. She is set to graduate in May 2025.
- Despite the unexpected diagnosis, Mary Lu remains committed to her education. She is determined to complete her coursework, even as she undergoes treatments.
- In addition to her studies, Mary Lu will begin working part-time at WVU's Carruth Counseling Center as a graduate assistant. Her passion for helping others shines through in her work, where she will provide support and guidance to fellow students.
- For those who have had the privilege of knowing Mary Lu, you understand the depth of her love and compassion. She has always been there for her family and friends, offering unwavering support and kindness.
**Course of Treatment:**
-Mary Lu is currently undergoing chemotherapy. All treatments happening at WVU Medicine, Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center in Morgantown.
- 4 rounds of chemo with the first cocktail of drugs, one round every two weeks. (Started April 9th)
- Next round of chemo with new drugs: either once a week for 12 weeks or once every two weeks for 8 weeks. (Starting June 4th)
- Surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy) in September or October
- Radiation after first surgery
- Reconstructive surgery after that
- She will be on hormone suppressants for at least 5 years
**Financial Challenges:**
- Mary Lu faces significant financial challenges due to her medical expenses. Her out-of-pocket maximum for insurance is $7,500, which means she will have to pay a total of $15,000 since her treatments will span two insurance cycles.
- It's important to note that Mary Lu's insurance is student insurance, and she must remain a full-time student throughout the year to be able to use it. Balancing her health and academic responsibilities is no small feat, but Mary Lu is determined to persevere.
