Hello, my name is Sheila.
I'm organizing a fundraiser for my family that lives in Amman, Jordan. My sister-in-law Marwa, who is only seventeen years old, was hit by a car around 6 weeks ago, while she was walking across the street on her way home from the store with her sister Roa'a. (if you watch the video, that shows the car impacting her) The car wasn't moving very fast, so luckily she was okay. But there was a lot of damage to one of her knees. The initial plan after the accident was to let the swelling go down, keep the leg wrapped, and in a brace for a time period and see how it would heal. The hope was that it would heal well, and there would be no need for surgery. At her 6 week checkup, unfortunately, the fracture did not heal correctly and the doctors have advised her to get knee surgery for the torn cruciate ligament in her knee. Without the financial ability to afford this surgery, they are relying on trying to just do physical therapy themselves at home.
The problem with the healthcare system in Jordan is that if you don't have the money upfront to cover the cost of care, you don't get the medical care you need.
The man who hit her with his car should have paid for the expenses and should be continuing to pay for ongoing care, he has paid only 100 dinars, so far which is about 150 US dollars. This didn't go very far. The family has had to take the man to court in order to get any kind of compensation. But, The judicial system in Jordan isn't always that helpful either. So they may or may not get anything out of this at the end of the day. In the meantime, without any money to pay for the care Marwa needs, her condition is not improving. Marwa is only 17 years old, and the fact that she may end up with some partial disability because the family cannot afford the medical care she needs and the man responsible doesn't seem to care is something that is hard for me to sit with. Jordan is a country that is struggling economically anyway, so money is hard to come by in that part of the world. They definitely know struggles with food, housing, medical care, and all of the basic essentials we take for granted on a daily basis over here in America.
So if anybody can help out even with a couple of dollars to help support this wonderful, brilliant young lady, who has a bright future ahead of her, to help restore her livelihood, to give her the medical care that she deserves, we would truly forever be grateful.
God bless!
