About two years ago, Marlene was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, an incurable lung disease that causes scarring of the lung tissue. Since her diagnosis, she has been bravely fighting to breathe and maintain her health. Each week, Marlene attends respiratory therapy to learn ways to improve her ability to breathe, and she takes medication that can help slow the progression of the disease. Unfortunately, these medications are very expensive, even with insurance. Marlene is now on oxygen almost 24/7, and her condition continues to worsen.
Recently, Marlene began an extensive pre-lung transplant evaluation process at UW Health in Madison, WI. This process requires her to travel from her home in Wisconsin Rapids to Madison over several weeks, staying in hotels and other temporary lodging. While we are hopeful about her chances for a transplant, the journey comes with many challenges. To qualify for the transplant, Marlene must have two caregivers—her daughter, Lesa, and brother-in-law, Steve Baumgartner—who will stay with her in Madison 24/7 for at least three months after the surgery. The costs of temporary lodging, transportation, and daily living expenses during this time are overwhelming.
Any help you can provide will mean a great deal to Marlene, her daughter (who will be away from her husband and children during this time), and their entire family. This has been a difficult journey, and we want to ensure that financial barriers do not stand in the way of Marlene’s care. Thank you so much for your consideration and support.
