Support Mark's Road to Recovery After Accident
Donation protected
On Monday, November 4th, Mark’s life changed when he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident with a deer. While he was found quickly and airlifted to UNC Hospital, Mark arrived in critical condition. Thankfully, by the time his family arrived, he was stable, but he had suffered significant injuries. Though he could breathe on his own and turn his head, Mark was unable to move much of his body.
That same day, Mark underwent surgery to remove a disc causing neurological damage, which was a success. But the road to recovery was just beginning.
Mark spent several days in the Neuro ICU and was then moved to a regular hospital room on November 8th. After nearly two weeks, he was transferred to another UNC campus to begin physical therapy, where he will remain for the next two weeks before returning home.
The neurological damage Mark sustained has affected his ability to use his hands, arms, and legs. While he has regained some movement, his recovery will require extensive physical therapy for at least 9–12 months. It’s likely that Mark will need to rely on a wheelchair during much of this time.
As many of you know, Mark was just two months shy of retirement when the accident occurred, and he is unable to work during this recovery period. The loss of his income and the unexpected medical costs have placed a heavy financial burden on the family.
We are reaching out to ask for help with the following expenses:
- Medical bills from surgery and ongoing treatment
- Home renovations to make Mark’s home wheelchair accessible, including installing a ramp and making necessary bathroom adjustments
- Hotel and SECU House stays for Kristie and Kate, who have been staying near UNC Hospital while Mark receives treatment. With Mark moving to a different campus for physical therapy, they will need to continue their stay for the next few weeks, which adds up quickly
Beyond our initial goal, any additional funds will go toward purchasing a wheelchair-accessible van to help transport Mark while he is in his wheelchair. While insurance will contribute toward the cost, there will still be a significant gap to cover.
Any donation, no matter the size, will be deeply appreciated by Mark and his family. Your support—whether through a contribution or sharing this campaign—means the world to us as we navigate this unexpected journey.
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.
