On February 1, 2026, my brother, Mark Laratta, suffered catastrophic kidney failure. One of his kidneys has been permanently lost with no hope of recovery, and the other is currently functioning at only 20%. Unfortunately, during his lengthy 2 week stay in the hospital he also contracted a serious bloodstream staph infection—one of the most severe types a person can develop. While hospitalized, Mark received extensive and excellent medical care. He underwent virtually every imaging study, blood test, urine test, and culture available. A constant rotation of specialists—including infectious disease experts—worked tirelessly on his case. For that care, we are incredibly grateful. However, that level of treatment comes with an overwhelming financial burden. The medical bills are expected to be astronomical. Mark and his wonderful wife, Lillian, are now facing a traumatic and financially devastating situation. As a family, we have committed to supporting them in every way we can, but the costs far exceed what any of us can manage alone.
The photo above is a special memory: this is when Mark and I met Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith! It’s a reminder of happier times and the kind of moments we hope to share again in the future.
Mark is truly one of the best people I know. He has always dropped everything to help family, neighbors, and anyone in need. I have always been proud to call him my brother and have tried throughout my life to emulate his integrity, compassion, and character. He is the very embodiment of the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” If you are able to help financially, we would be deeply grateful. And if you are not, please consider sharing this message so it may reach others who can. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Bob Laratta
