Friends and family,
We’re reaching out to ask for your support for our brother Mark, his partner Kera, and their sons Sawyer and Henry as they face an unexpected and life-altering medical emergency.
On Wednesday, June 18, Mark suffered a sudden and severe episode of diabetic ketoacidosis, brought on by a recent stomach virus. This led to cardiac arrest. Kera arrived home just in time to call 911 and perform CPR. He was rushed to Metro Health, where he has been receiving intensive care.
Mark’s cardiac arrest resulted in a hypoxic-ischemic brain injury—caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. While MRI and EEG tests have confirmed the presence of brain damage, we can’t yet know the full extent of its impact. Mark is beginning to show signs of responsiveness: he’s following basic commands, making eye contact, and moving his arms and legs.
His recovery will be a long journey, likely involving weeks or months of rehabilitation across multiple care facilities.
We’re staying positive and are hopeful that Mark will be back to building rockets with Sawyer and Henry before too long. Until then, we’re all rallying around Kera and their boys. While Mark does have insurance, the costs associated with this kind of crisis are overwhelming—from medical bills to travel expenses, meals, hotel stays near the hospital, and help at home with the tasks Mark can no longer manage.
If you're able, please consider contributing to ease the financial and emotional burden on the family. Every donation will make a meaningful difference. Mark and Kera are lucky to have an incredible support system of friends and family…let’s make sure that they have what they need.
