My name is Marjorie Matamoros and four years ago I left home at 18 with two suitcases and very big dreams.

I come from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, raised by hard-working parents who have labored tirelessly since they were 15 and have done everything in their power to provide the best education for my brothers and I.

Through their perseverance, I was able to get my Bachelors in film at Columbia College in Chicago, and recently I moved to New York to continue working as a video director and editor. Coming from a place where there aren’t many resources for art, I longed to create a world in which there is space for Honduran art— to come to the US and spotlight my country; but more than anything, my dream, like any other immigrant’s, is to be able to help my parents achieve economic stability back home, so they can retire.

For the last 4 years I have found myself doing that very thing. Working endlessly to achieve my dreams, playing chess and learning all the codes that exist in a world as confusing and intricate as the art world. In recent years my work has managed to be in two film festivals, has been published in articles, I’ve been part of a few installations in NY + Chicago, I have managed to work with renowned musical artists, but all of my achievements mean nothing without the stability of my immigration status.

All this time has felt like building a house on top of sand—at any moment a strong tide can come and take it all away. In an attempt to achieve a little more stability and lay a concrete foundation, I’m asking for your help to cover my immigration expenses.

The journey has been tough, balancing immigration hurdles while pushing forward in the creative world, but I’ve never been more determined to make it work.
