A few weeks ago, my close friend, Mario, was seriously injured in a tragic accident. For someone who is normally physically active and independent, he now has several months of intensive healing and rehabilitation to make a full recovery.

The accident caused multiple fractures that required immediate surgeries to repair and totaled his car. So far, his healing journey will require up to two months of extremely limited mobility and very intensive rehabilitation therapy. While these immediate impacts of the accident are clear, the financial aspects it will require to support his full recovery are not.

Despite these challenges, Mario’s spirits remain incredibly high. Through it all, his mental Rolodex of movie quotes and music lyrics is going strong, and he’s kept his close friends, family and care team members smiling and laughing. Mario’s motivation to be discharged ASAP is to make it home to spend more time with friends and family, especially his beautiful daughters.

Mario’s mobility is anticipated remain limited - non-weight bearing weight on his healing extremities - for at least another month. He’ll most likely continue to need ongoing intensive physical therapy through the end of this year to make a full recovery. While this might sound like a major challenge, Mario is fully invested in regaining his full strength, mobility and independence.
