Marilou Jose has always been a pillar of strength and kindness, facing countless challenges throughout her life without ever showing weakness. Today, on her 76th birthday, she finds herself navigating a new and difficult path—her first birthday without her beloved husband, who passed away just nine days ago. Their marriage of 53 years was a testament to love and partnership, and together they built a life centered on helping others, even when they had little themselves. I grew up witnessing their generosity firsthand, as they welcomed friends, family, and even strangers into our small one-bedroom apartment, offering shelter and support until those individuals could get back on their feet. Despite their own struggles, my parents never hesitated to give, and the impact they made on others’ lives was immeasurable.

Twenty years ago, new challenges emerged when my dad underwent a quadruple bypass, followed by a stroke that left him unable to work and support our family. My mom stepped up, taking on all responsibilities and continuing to work as a caregiver, both professionally and for my dad, who later required dialysis and frequent hospitalizations. Retirement was never truly restful for her, as she continued to help struggling families back in her home country, even when she herself needed support. Through it all, she remained strong, never asking for help or showing her pain. Now, with my dad gone, Marilou faces the daunting task of rebuilding her life alone, burdened by medical bills and daily expenses. I wish I could do more to help her, but I am also facing my own health challenges, having recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor. My greatest hope is that compassionate people will come together to support my mom, lifting some of the weight from her shoulders so she can finally find peace and comfort in her remaining years. She truly deserves it after a lifetime of selfless giving, and I know my dad is watching over her, hoping she will be cared for by those with empathy and kindness.
