Support Marieke and Afonso
Donation protected
Last week a fire started near Sao Tetonio (Alentejo, Portugal) were at least 8.000 ha land and forest was destroyed. The fire lasted for five days, 20 villages and at least 1.400 people were affected. Sadly the fire also got to the property of Marieke and Afonso. On Saturday 5th of August the fire reached their land and after a cumbersome and heroic deed of Afonso, the fire near their property was contained. However on Monday 7th of August due to a lot of wind, the fire started again and made it again to their land.
The effort and work of the last eight years was seriously impacted. Not only a large proportion of their Medronho trees burnt down, but also a lot of infrastructure was affected, i.e. the Junior Jacques bar where they organised their diners and tastings, the caravan where they accommodated multiple guest and friends, the irrigation tanks, the container holding 500+ Medronho bottles ready for transport, etc.
We would like to support Marieke, Afonso, Elias and Lucas in these difficult times. We started a crowdfunding webpage for those who would like to help and to give your support.
Not only Marieke and Afonso were affected by this tragedy, but also a lot of their friends and
neighbours in the surrounding valleys. Houses and accommodations were destroyed, cars and
belonging burnt to the ground, businesses are affected, …
The people within the community also started a crowd fund to support those who need it the most.
If you would like to support this community, we provide you this link as well.
At this moment the consequences of the fire for the community and for Marieke and Afonso are only starting to emerge. This may be an insurmountable incident. As there is not a lot we can do from a distance, we started this crowd funding. We reach out to all of you. Know that all efforts – big or small – will help a lot.
Eternal gratitude
