Donation protected
Maricela’s world suddenly and drastically changed in May of 2023 when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer (initially Stage 1B2). What seemed like a minor issue at the time has turned into her worst nightmare - countless surgeries and procedures, multiple rounds of chemotherapy, 25 external radiation treatments and 5 brachytherapy (internal radiation) treatments. Despite everything that her body has been through, this aggressive cancer has not been eradicated and recent scans show tumor growth and metastases to her lungs.
Mari has been out of work for over a year now due to her diagnosis, intensive treatments, and complications related to treatments. She has exhausted state disability and long term disability is not helpful. Unfortunately, life cannot be paused and bills, both regular and medical, continue to pile up. Insurance only goes so far; Mari has been paying many costs out-of-pocket but this is no longer possible, and it is difficult to say when she will return to work with her current status. Right now, she is waiting for the next plan of care to commence at City of Hope and a possible clinical trial at UCLA.
Maricela and I have known each other since kindergarten....now 30 years and counting. I have had the privilege to see her through all of her life stages; loss of a family member, birth of her daughter, heartaches, becoming a nurse etc .
Maricela is the best example when describing a real friend. She is the most genuine, caring and wholesome person. Mari is a giver and will always put others first to ensure their happiness; those who have had the privilege to know her know-what I mean.
Maricela is a strong human being. Life has thrown many things at her and she continues to receive it with grace.
Although there have been more bad days than good with her diagnosis; I have seen first hand how she has taken it all in. With a good spirit and a strong and positive mentality. Something so many of us would not be capable of doing. To see her strength through this process has been inspiring on a personal level; more so as her friend.
A small circle of immediate family and friends have been with her through this journey. As many of you know, Maricela does not like to trouble people and/or ask for help. It has taken multiple conversations for her to finally agree to this GoFundMe page. Today we ask you for your help; Please join us in helping to relieve a bit of the burden. Let's surpass the goal!
Calls and questions, while 100% understandable, can be challenging and overwhelming during the navigation of this journey. While Mari is open to texts - prayers, positive encouragement and love are hugely appreciated. If you have additional questions, please be patient in waiting for a response.
Updates will be posted here and caringbridge on an ongoing basis.
Maricela’s zelle will also be posted for those who want to use that route vs GoFundMe.
Thank you for your generosity.
