Mother, wife, sister, daughter, breast cancer survivor, and teacher are only some of the titles that our beloved Maria is known by.
Maria, or Chayo as she is affectionately referred to by loved ones, was dealt a devastating blow in late December when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) only a few days before Christmas.
The sad news felt all too familiar for Chayo who won a battle with breast cancer in her late thirties.
Finding out she had cancer a second time was not easy for her or her family but she beat it once before and those who know her and love her know that she will beat it once again.
Chayo is a devoted mother and a loving wife to a man that after 26 years of marriage, is still proud to call his wife his "best friend".
Chayo has devoted much of her life to education. She has been a devoted school teacher for over 25 years. She has a passion for teaching and can't imagine doing anything else, whether it's in the classroom at El Marino Language school where she works or at her church teaching catechism. She has spent countless hours in the classroom as an Immersion teacher and has served as a mentor and role model to students who adore her . The students Chayo has inspired have shown her an outpouring of love and support as she fights her battle. The get well cards they made for her have decorated her hospital room and have lifted her spirits. But she won't be truly happy until she is back in the classroom doing what she loves most.
Chayo has begun chemotherapy and is fighting a strong fight. She has the love and support of her family and everyone that knows her but the hospital bills have already started to pile up. We need your support to help her tackle those bills so that she can keep receiving the treatment she needs and so that she can remain focused on kicking this cancers ass!
Chayo is no where near done with the work she was placed on this earth to do. She has many young minds to inspire and a daughter who still needs the love and guidance of her mother.
Every lit bit counts and your support, no matter the amount, is appreciated.
