Hello,
My name is Maria Willis. I am 20 years old and I live in Houston,TX with my family. In April of 2020 while traveling home from a day out with my family, we were struck by a drunk driver in our car. Although all of us suffered injuries, I unfortunately took the worst of it all. I had to spend three months in the hospital. Two weeks of which I was in a coma in ICU. After waking up and leaving ICU to a step down unit I began a rigorous inpatient therapy program in which I had to relearn all my motor skills, including how to walk again. In the end, I was able to make a full recovery. Even still however, the injuries I sustained left me permanently susceptible to future injuries. I did not allow that to stop me though. I am a resilient young woman! I returned to normal life and was able to keep up with my school work and even graduated a year early. Just a little less than one year after I was released from the hospital. Since graduating, I have continued to heal physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I have continued to thrive as a young adult and have been so grateful for this second chance at life living everyday to the fullest. Sadly, a couple of weeks ago I suffered another unfortunate accident. This time it required me to have spinal fusion surgery. The road for this recovery will be an even longer and harder one. At the current moment although I am giving therapy my absolute all, I am suffering from partial paralysis. I have limited movement of my arms and no movement of my hands or bottom half of my body. At this time I do not know if my paralysis is temporary or permanent. While I was employed at the time of this incident I had only been on my current job for four days so I was not able to receive any benefits yet. The hospital that I am in has done all that they can for me and will be discharging me home next week with my mother. My mother is a single mom with two younger children. She works two jobs and is already struggling to make ends meet. With me having to come home in my current condition I will need special accommodations. Things such as a hospital bed, a hoyer lift, and a power wheelchair just to name a few. Not to mention the accommodations we will need to make to our home for me and all of the medications that my mother will have to pay for out of pocket for to keep me comfortable. I am asking if you can find it in your heart and are able to help me with my medical and life expenses at this time anything you can give would be truly appreciated. Thank you for your time. I love you all.
