My mother, Maria Diaz, spent her life pouring herself into others. She stood at the front of classrooms for decades, shaping young minds and investing in children who weren’t her own. She served the church offering comfort, hope, and guidance to her community. She gave and gave — often before she ever thought of herself.

Now, at this stage of her life, my mother is living with Alzheimer’s disease. The woman who remembered every student’s name, every Scripture verse, every person she ever prayed for, is now in a battle with her own memory. And she deserves to face that battle in a safe, loving, supportive environment.

Why We Need Your Help

Maria’s only income is Social Security and Medicaid. While we are deeply grateful for those resources, they are not enough to cover the cost of the assisted living facility she needs — a place where trained caregivers can support her daily, where she can be safe, and where she can still find moments of joy and dignity.

As her only son, I would carry this entire weight myself if I could. But the truth is, I can’t do it alone. The up front costs to enter Assisted living far exceed what her benefits cover and what we personally possess as a family. I am asking our community — friends, former students, church family, and kind strangers — to help bridge that gap.
