Howdy! I'm a cartoonist who moved to Grand Rapids, MI alone in 2020.
I've been so warmed by the joy of giving and receiving support in this community so early into my time here and have now found myself in severe need.
Truthfully, I hate writing stuff like this--we each have our laundry list of hardship and it's difficult to not compare. However, it's important to me that folks know that this need is not coming out of thin air.
So here it goes, in the last eight months, I have:
- Continued work the next day after attempting to die by suicide with no healthcare or support.
- Discovered 2 new life-threatening allergies through 4 back-to-back anaphylactic reactions.
- Worked to recover the unpaid bills of 3 roommates who have unexpectedly broken the lease set to end May 31st, 2025.
- Lost my vehicle and have started relying on public transit.
- As of early May, have been laid off from my dream job.
Before getting laid off, financially recovering from these challenges on my own felt possible.
Today, I am grieved to understand that it simply isn't.
I've begun searching: for employment, housing, an okay-priced EpiPen, and moments to re-connect with friends and community.
My first goal is $1,250–a month’s worth of rent that was ordinarily split between three people. My stretch goal is $2,000–It’ll be used to catch up on utilities, buy groceries, and cover a portion of the deposit required to find other housing.
Any and all amounts, words of encouragement, and kind thoughts are deeply appreciated in helping me transition into a more secure season of life.
With all of my love,
Margo
