Marcy has always been the one to show up for others—with kindness, generosity, and steady support. She is a devoted single mother of three children (two in college and one just beginning his career), a loyal friend, and a generous spirit who welcomes everyone into her home. Now, in the fight of her life against terminal Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, it’s our turn to show up for her.
In June 2024, just as Marcy was preparing to move from California to the East Coast to be closer to her children, she received the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer that spread to her liver and spine. Her cancer carries a rare mutation that makes it extremely aggressive and difficult to treat. Because it is Stage 4, surgery is not an option, and chemotherapy is especially challenging.
On top of her medical battle, Marcy faces heavy financial burdens. She is self-employed in the nonprofit sector, which means:
- Health insurance and medical costs are extremely high.
- She has no benefits like sick leave or paid time off.
- When she is too ill to work—which is often due to treatments, procedures, and hospitalizations—she has no income.
Her youngest son, a college student, lives with her and has taken on the role of caregiver, driving her to every appointment, staying with her during hospital stays and caring for her at home. While Marcy is doing everything she can to provide for her children—still cooking meals, cheering them on at swim meets, and supporting them in young adulthood—the weight of her illness, financial stress, and limited family support nearby makes her situation overwhelming.
